Keeping Clinically Current and How to Perform Critical Appraisal in Everyday Practice

03-26-2017 16:08

This presentation addresses the need for busy family physicians and residency faculty to remain critically current and utilize a realistic method of critical appraisal. With over 2000 articles indexed in Medline daily, it is critically important for physicians to have a way to keep current while making the most of their time. The explosion of medical articles has led to the creation of outstanding literature scavengers. It is critical for family medicine residency faculty to be familiar with these sources and role model their use for residents. Sometimes we still need to look up full length articles so physicians still need critical appraisal skills. This presentation will show faculty the best sources to remain critically current through services such as the Daily POEM, Journal Watch, the Best Science Medicine Podcast, and the Prescriber's Letter as well as a system to critically appraise the medical literature using the "How to Review an RCT in 10 Minutes" format. Participants will work through several cases and get hands-on time with these sources. Participants will critique a journal article on the spot using the highly effective, “How to Review an RCT in 10 Minutes” format. Finally, participants will review the best examples of information mastery curricula including how to incorporate a dynamic journal club into their residency along with outher information mastery resources.
