Incorporating Teaching of Maternity Care in Family Medicine Through Computerized Simulation Models

05-03-2018 14:38

Family Medicine (FM) physicians provide Maternity Care to patients across the United States which requires competency in Maternity Care. Currently, FM residents complete the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Provider course to acquire the essential skills needed for managing obstetrical emergencies. In 2018, the ALSO course will transition to a 1-day course, creating a compact amount of time for residents to learn necessary skills. The Mini ALSO course provides an innovative way for FM educators to incorporate Maternity Care training into their curriculum with computerized simulation models and develop resident educators. Twenty-three residents from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston attended the mini ALSO course and were divided into 3 groups for various simulations: postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia and assisted vaginal delivery, and evaluation of fetal heart tracings. Resident feedback was obtained using a Likert scale survey (1=strongly disagree, 5=strongly agree), evaluating the course and each individual station. Twenty-three residents attended the mini ALSO course: 9 PGY-1, 5 PGY-2, and 9 PGY-3 residents. 100% of the PGY-1 residents, 60% of the PGY-2 residents, and 100% of PGY-3 residents completed an evaluation on the course. Overall, residents of each post graduate year, found the mini ALSO course to be beneficial to their learning and preparation for the wards.
