HIV is a Family Medicine Thing: Assessing and Advancing Residency HIV Education

This interactive session will focus on assessing HIV educational curricular needs and identifying ways to advance HIV education at the residency level. Session participants will be provided with tools and instruction to analyze resident needs and the strengths and opportunities within their own residency programs. HIV educational competency levels will be discussed to help better clarify residency program and individual resident goals. The three levels of proposed competency are: basic (what every graduate should know about HIV), HIV primary care (what every resident who is planning on doing primary care for patients with HIV should know), and comprehensive care (what every resident should know who will be managing and changing medicine for HIV). Residency programs ranging from limited to more extensive HIV training will compare models for various levels of HIV educational training. Participants will be provided with resources with links to HIV curriculum, basic assessment tools, and guidelines to allow participants to advance HIV education in their family medicine residency. Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to: Describe three levels of competency in caring for those infected with HIV (basic, HIV primary care, HIV comprehensive care). Evaluate your residency training program’s current HIV curriculum and future educational needs using an assessment tool. Identify local and national curricular resources to develop and advance HIV education at the residency level.
