Teaching Community Health Assessment on an LIC

04-10-2018 13:15

The University of MN Rural & Metropolitan Physician Associate Program (RPAP/MetroPAP) requires students complete a community health assessment (CHA) project during their 3rd year, 9-month, family medicine-based, longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC).  At year-end, students evaluate the overall value of the UMN CHA project to their learning.  Community CHA project partners also assess student performance on their CHA project.  112 students completed 104 projects in 2015,,2016 & 2017.  80% of students agree, or strongly agree, that the CHA project was an important part of their LIC.  95.2% agree, or strongly agree, that the CHA project provided them a valuable experience working with their community.   CHA project project partners in 2016 & 2017 also rated RPAPk/MetroPAP students' communication skills, professionalism, teamwork and knowledge mastery as either above or exceeding their expectations.  Authentic community engagement is possible when medical students complete CHA projects on an LIC.
