Promoting Medical and Allied Health Students’ Readiness to Engage in Health Technologies in Future Practice

02-01-2018 10:24

Health information technology (HIT) has revolutionized the world in its influence on health care. Medical students' attitudes towards HIT tools, such as electronic medical records, may influence their willingness learn, adopt, and utilize these tools. Scarce information is available on factors influencing students' readiness for HIT engagement and utilization prior to residency placement. During this session we will discuss the findings from a study conducted with medical students to investigate their attitudes and behaviors regarding HIT and to identify factors related to readiness to utilize it in future clinical practice. We will also address the two major domains (attitudes and utilization) under which the following content areas were assessed: (1) technology self-efficacy, (2) perceived ease of use and usefulness of HIT, (3) attitudes to toward mobile technology, and (4) information technology (IT) utilization. Lastly, we will discuss how medical informatics should be integrated using specially designed classrooms where students are motivated to learn how to use HIT technologies. Increasing student self-efficacy regarding HIT use and engaging students in hands-on HIT utilization practice in school may help promote their readiness to use HIT technology in future practice. While more research in this area is warranted, findings from this study may help guide medical education curriculum enhancements to better prepare tomorrow's physicians in HIT engagement and utilization.
