Presented as a pre-conference workshop at the 2018 annual meeting, this session worked to build skills for women and underrepresented minorities in medicine to advance professionally. We focused on negotiation, sponsorship, and mentorship. We also discussed the structural inequities within academic medical systems that partially caused, and continue to contribute to, the lack of diversity in family medicine leadership, and reviewed the current literature on these inequities. We focused primarily on individual skill-building, but also discussed large-scale issues and needed changes in medical culture and systems to truly work towards equity in our field.
