Training Our Educators: Using the STFM Residency Faculty Fundamentals Certificate Program

All faculty need to be equipped with the necessary tools and skills to succeed as educators. To meet the demand for online learning on foundational faculty development topics, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) created the Residency Faculty Fundamentals Certificate Program. Launched in June 2017, this certificate program addresses key faculty competencies with courses on curriculum development, assessment, scholarly activity, and residency administration.

In this session, participants will learn how to implement successful online faculty development and ensure the transfer of learning into practice at the residency educator’s work setting.The presenters will provide an overview of the program content and share outcomes from the first 18 months of the certificate program, including user demographics, knowledge gaps, and overall performance improvement.

Graduates of the certificate program from Mount Carmel FMR and the New Mexico Primary Care Training Consortium will discuss their use of the program to support their faculty development, well-being, and advancement. The audience members are invited to discuss successes and current challenges in using online faculty development resources at their residency programs.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Affirm the importance of timely faculty development for new faculty that provides the proper tools to ensure success as an educator.
  2. Use a faculty development framework that addresses common gaps in the fundamental skills and knowledge of residency faculty educators.
  3. Describe specific ways that graduates of the certificate program have gained institutional support and made time in their busy schedules for this model of faculty development
