The number of medical students and residents with disabilities is much lower than that of the general population, probably because medical school technical standards can be overly restrictive and exclude students with disabilities which violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 2008 ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA). We review the legislation involved and accommodations and assistive technologies available, discuss a literature review of medical students with disabilities and practicing physicians with disabilities, demonstrate how a mentor can develop an action plan to provide support and seek necessary accommodations for a medical student or resident with a disability, and discuss the 2018 AAMC Manual on Physicians and Students with Disabilities which is a call to action to change medical school technical standards so they're more inclusive and provides ways to make medical students and residents with disabilities feel supported and confident they can reveal their disability and seek necessary accommodations without facing stigma and/or reprisal.
