Student 360 Evaluation in Flipped Classroom

02-02-2018 22:46

As medical school faculty, we are constantly looking for methods by which to evaluate students’ preparedness, participation, and professionalism (the 3Ps) for class and lecture, especially in the flipped classroom.

We, as educators, are often strapped for resources and are well outnumbered by the number of medical students within our courses. This becomes more of a challenge in the flipped classroom, as the onus is on students to pre-learn the material which will be covered in class and to participate in group discussions while they may be preoccupied with other aspects of their education.

We have developed a method by which students can receive formative feedback about their preparedness, participation, and professionalism through use of a 360 evaluation. After flipped classroom discussions and small groups, student evaluate the 3Ps using a computerized feedback form. This allows students to receive direct feedback about their preparation, allows us to evaluate participation and professionalism, which is a necessity for maintaining accreditation as a medical school, and prepares students to provide constructive feedback to their peers.

The overall feedback from the students was positive and the experience was well received.  Time and resources are our leading challenges as they are with many other teaching techniques, as the computer programs to which we have access, do not yet accommodate this method of assessment without a lot of manual input. However, we have recognized that this is a process which we must continue to work on in order to elicit and give feedback to the students on the 3Ps.
