L14A Family Medicine Clerkship Faculty Development: A Longitudinal, Team Endeavor

01-11-2019 15:01

Faculty development is foundational for a successful FM clerkship. This presentation highlights the simultaneous themes of time and teamwork required to deliver an individualized, dynamic, and efficient faculty development curriculum. Faculty development challenges in our distributed community clerkship model include geography as well as preceptors’ productivity requirements, time stresses and various levels of experience in teaching. Successful faculty development depends on building relationships over time through a team delivery model consisting of students, the coordinator and clerkship director as well as centralized support from the director of clinical faculty development. Each person brings her own perspective and skillset to the table for successful faculty development. Components of a successful faculty development curriculum include educating preceptors about the student clerkship curriculum and performing individualized needs assessment through site and preceptor evaluations. Identified issues are proactively addressed through periodic in-person meetings and phone calls, regular communications via email or newsletter with community preceptors, and an accessible website.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the various roles and activities involved in a successful team-based faculty development model;
  2. Describe the longitudinal and dynamic nature of relationships in faculty development;
  3. Identify three strategies for enhancing their clerkship’s own delivery of faculty development.
