Launching a Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Program in Rural Haiti through a Collaborative Two Week Training and Mass Screening Event

Cervical cancer is highly prevalent among Haitian women. A national prevention program does not currently exist in Haiti, only independent initiatives. To address this gap, Hopital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) with support from H3Missions, Rotary International, University of California Riverside, and Loma Linda University launched a cervical cancer screening and treatment program starting with a two-week training event in 2018 that included a mass screening of about 800 women. This event incorporated visual inspection with acetic acid, cytology-based screening, cryotherapy, colposcopy, and loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). A team of family medicine and OB-GYN residents, medical students, and faculty collaborated to develop a didactic curriculum, patient education materials, and data collection tools prior to the event and to train ten HAS gynecologists, other physicians, midwives, and nurses. This project demonstrates how involving residents and students in a global health initiative contributes to its success and to their own educational experience.
