Breaking Down Barriers to Implement a Buprenorphine Clinic in the Residency Setting

04-25-2019 14:55

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with suboxone is a safe and effective approach to supporting patients with opioid use disorder, and residency programs are increasingly striving to enhance exposure to MAT for their trainees.  Our program identified enhancing substance abuse treatment options for our patients as a major goal. During this roundtable presentation, we will describe our efforts to launch a MAT specialty clinic within a community-based, urban underserved family medicine residency. We were able to successfully partner with an affiliated internal medicine GME clinic and leverage external partnerships including our state Medicaid program to ease the startup burden.  We will outline our successful approaches to surmounting common challenges, including achieving buy-in from an initially reluctant clinic and GME leadership and developing a staffing model to facilitate integration of psychosocial services. Finally, together with participants, we will explore how our experience may apply to other implementation settings. Ultimately, participants will gain increased confidence in offering resident training and MAT services to patients in their own programs.
