Easing the Load of Precepting: Efficiently Integrating Students into Ambulatory Training Sites

02-02-2019 17:21

Tactic Team 3 of the Preceptor Expansion Initiative has launched a project to expand the pool of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants working to educate our students during ambulatory clinical rotations by reducing the administrative burden for all involved. We have created a set of tools that we believe will help enhance the onboarding of students into ambulatory training environments, facilitate learning in these vital spaces, and reduce the administrative burden on community-based preceptors. These materials include a student clinical rotation passport, training materials for students with tips and strategies on key topics for ambulatory environments, and suggestions for schools to streamline the administrative processes for bringing in new preceptors into medical education and for sustaining existing educators. Our efforts to enhance onboarding are being tested nationally at multiple institutions through a pilot program in 2019.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Review, comment on, and use our shared community preceptor onboarding materials after publication;
  2. Enhance student preparedness to work in ambulatory training environments;
  3. Increase student value at ambulatory clinical training sites.
