Measuring the Impact of A Telemedicine Simulation On Medical Students

02-16-2017 12:51

Telemedicine is on the rise as a clinical practice model. Learners should be exposed to this new practice model in order to learn how to use this technology in a patient-centric manner and in which video visits can safely be used to augment care. This presentation will describe a Telemedicine Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TeleOSCE) that puts students into the role of conducting a primary care visit via videoconference with patients. The TeleOSCE is a required, formative assessment that allows learners to practice doing telemedicine in a simulated environment so they are exposed to the nuances of the new practice mode. The TeleOSCE has been running for three years and has been disseminated to multiple other intuitions. A survey was implemented by the originating program using a pre-post design to measure what impact, participation in the TeleOSCE has on a student’s knowledge of, confidence in and attitude towards, telemedicine. This presentation will describe the TeleOSCE and the impact is has on student learners. Preliminary data from two other institutions who have implemented the TeleOSCE will also be shared.
