Promoting Medical Student Wellness Using a Hybrid Online Curriculum

To support M1 students in adjusting their self-care to the demands of medical education, we began offering a "Self-care 101" course in 2000, using a small group format. During the second semester of the first year, medical students elected to attend this 7-week elective. Physical, social, emotional, intellectual, occupational, spiritual and financial well-being were addressed in seven weekly two-hour sessions. The course was very successful using a small-group format. However, we wondered how we could make the course available to the entire class (approximately 200 students), and received funding to pilot a hybrid online course in Spring 2016. The hybrid course included two face-to-face sessions, four web-based sessions using the Zoom videoconferencing tool, and one session where students completed course activities independently.
