A Preceptor Teaching Improvement Course: A Maintenance of Certification Pilot

01-31-2019 22:57

This presentation will discuss the implementation of a teaching improvement curriculum, on family physicians serving as community-based preceptors for medical students at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. In early 2018 the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine invited organizations to apply to participate as a pilot school in providing credit for maintenance of certification for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) for faculty who meet criteria and participate in a teaching improvement activity. Faculty will be invited to participate in this faculty development course in exchange for maintenance of certification (MOC) credit that assists with certification through the ABFM. Part of the requirements for earning certification include completing assessments of teaching efficacy and professional fulfillment before and after the intervention. The teaching improvement activity will involve listening to brief podcasts that are specific to faculty teaching students in longitudinal curricula. Topics covered (MP3 and PDF): Podcast 1: Encouraging Continuity, Podcast 2: Bedside Teaching, Podcast 3: Encouraging Student Ownership of Patients, Podcast 4: Communicating and Managing Patient Results During Off-Clinic Days, Podcast 5: Choosing the Right Patients for Continuity. This presentation will discuss the implementation of the teaching improvement curriculum, preliminary outcome data and lessons learned.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify opportunities to expand the pool of qualified community-based preceptors through innovative incentives and faculty development opportunities;
  2. Describe the plan utilized at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine to engage community-based preceptors in a teaching improvement activity;
  3. Plan for having community-based faculty hit certain benchmarks in order to track and report earning maintenance of certification credit.
