Development of a Community-Based Clinical Training Site Addressing the Needs of Latino Immigrants

05-03-2017 18:38

Session Type: Lecture Discussion According to the 2010 US Census Data, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania experienced an 82.6% increase in the Latino population between 2000 and 2010 (Ennis, 2011). In Philadelphia alone, the Latino population rose 45.5% from 2000 to 2010, representing the area’s fastest growing minority and accounting for a large portion of the city’s first population increase in decades. The incidence of chronic disease in Latino Americans has closely paralleled this rapid increase in population size. Puentes de Salud was founded to address the lack of culturally appropriate public health services for the Latino immigrant community in Philadelphia. During this session, we discuss the creation of a novel collaboration of our residency program with this community-based organization caring for Latino immigrants in Philadelphia, to create longitudinal clinical care opportunities, perform an on-going needs assessment, provide didactic educational experiences, and incorporate language training opportunities for residents through support of a 5-year HRSA grant. We will discuss outcomes, qualitative experiences, successes and challenges, as well as a plan for further implementation of this longitudinal curriculum. Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to: Have learned from one example of a collaborative opportunity with a community organization to create a clinical training site exposing trainees to health care of a Latino Immigrant population, and identify the potential for the development of a similar opportunity at your institution. Discuss barriers to the development of longitudinal experience addressing the needs of Latino immigrant populations at a community-based organization and apply lessons learned to be better equipped to overcome them. Possess a toolkit for development and evaluation of such a training opportunity to apply to one’s own residency.
