Getting to Zero From the Other Side of the HIV Epidemic: PrEP in Women, Young MSM of Color, PWID, and Rural Areas

04-28-2019 17:58

These are the presentation slides from a 30min lecture-discussion on PrEP.  Content description below:

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was approved for adults in 2012 and adolescents in 2018.  It is a landmark HIV prevention tool that is vastly underutilized in some populations, i.e. people in rural areas, women, PWID, and young people of color.  Important gaps exist for providers, educators, patients, and advocacy organizations about how best to deliver and teach PrEP in these populations, who are not the urban white MSM most targeted by PrEP outreach campaigns.  Many women and adolescents are not aware of PrEP, and there are relatively few efforts to integrate PrEP into broader women's and teen health initiatives, STI education, and substance use programs.  Family physicians can effectively address a critical need in preventing HIV among patients who are traditionally under-recognized and under-served by mainstream HIV prevention efforts.  Our panel will include shared experiences from experts across multiple educational and clinical settings.  Participants will interactively dialogue about what is known/unknown about PrEP in these special populations and share resources for successfully implementing patient-centered PrEP education and care into women's and adolescent health programs, rural areas, and substance use services.
