In preparing medical learners to lead teams and effect positive change in health care systems, it is imperative that we assure a solid level of competency is being achieved in certain skills. A critical one for leadership success is recognizing, understanding and managing/resolving conflict. Residencies are natural breeding grounds for conflict which is a gift to residency educators. Using real life examples of common residency situations, this session will help faculty attendees (1) define different types of conflict, (2) examine their own conflict management family history, (3) discover the value of good conflict assessment, and (4) outline a 6 step process to approach/manage and hopefully avoid similar conflicts in the future. This train the trainer model will then afford attendees a packaged presentation to use in their own residency education series to grow the skill level of medical learners (fellows, residents and medical students).
