Learning From Others’ Mistakes: ABFM Guidelines for Professionalism, Licensure, and Personal Conduct

06-06-2018 09:38

The ABFM Credentials Committee is tasked with reviewing appeals of revocation of board certification; its chair will present cases and important learning points for attendees to disseminate as part of a licensure and certification-related professionalism curriculum. Many graduating residents and faculty have never actually read nor received formal instruction on the ABFM Guidelines for Professionalism, Licensure, and Personal Conduct as it's often considered "fine print". These requirements are important to know however, and are not necessarily intuitive. Important details will be reviewed. State licensing boards, FSMB, ABMS, and ABFM processes impacting licensure and certification status will also be discussed. After being given the facts of each case the presenters will ask the audience what they presume the state licensing board and ABFM’s disciplinary outcome was, provide the actual outcome, and also discuss potentially suboptimal decisions made by diplomates within the regulatory process. Curricular materials to use for educational sessions at the attendee’s home residency will be shared.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify common causes of state license restrictions and loss of board certification
  2. Provide an effective teaching session on ABFM Guidelines for Professionalism, Licensure, and Personal Conduct and ensure residents understand the connections between licensing and certifying authorities
  3. Teach residents how to best respond to patient complaints to state medical licensing boards, how to approach hearings, understand consent agreements, and know important actions to best protect ABFM certification.

This powerpoint is meant to be used as an "off-the-shelf" resource for residencies' Professionalism and Health Systems Management curriculum, which can be presented in a 1 hour lecture period. Special attention should be paid to the Speaker notes attached to each slide which provides background information, as well as a pre/ post test at the end of the slide-set which can be used to engage learners prior to the presentation and/or test knowledge acquisition.
