Managing the Pain: Using an Interdisciplinary Consultation Team to Educate Residents (and Faculty) About Challenging Controlled Medication Practices

05-02-2017 08:47

This session will describe the experience of an interdisciplinary team in providing consultation for residents (and faculty) concerning treatment of their patients with controlled medications. The team includes two faculty physicians, a faculty psychologist, a social worker, and a registered nurse. The presenters will review how residents request consultation for their patients, particularly those who are being treated with high doses or combinations of controlled medications. The team meets biweekly to discuss referred patients and offer recommendations to the residents. Residents are educated in managing controlled medications by engaging in the team’s meetings as part of their Quality Improvement rotations, by attending the meetings when their own patients are discussed, and by learning from feedback sent by the team. The presenters will provide examples of cases discussed and responses of residents to receiving recommendations from the team. We will encourage sharing of strategies used and resident education provided in other programs in treating patients with controlled medications. We will engage participants in discussion about the opportunities and barriers to implementing team consultation in their own programs.
