Teaching Humanism to the Millennial Medical Student: An Alternative and Interdisciplinary Approach

04-21-2018 16:33

As medicine has continued to grow and evolve in the recent past, so has the field of medical education. Millennial students entering into the training of medicine are increasingly savvy, and educators have found themselves searching for new and innovative tools to teach this new generation of students. The traditional format of a professor giving a lecture in a large hall has been on the decline in the recent past, both in use and popularity among students. Though it does have its role, one of the longstanding drawbacks to this traditional format has been its limitations to teaching the crafts that form the "art" of medicine: empathy, humanism, and communication skills. We partnered with the Department of Clinical Psychology to develop a "Humanities Selective" program to develop an alternative curriculum to teach these crafts. This session will discuss the importance of using alternative methods to teach these skillsets; the barriers commonly encountered with developing these programs; and the creative use of resources and opportunities to provide an interdisciplinary approach to implementing these teaching strategies.
