Turning away vs toward: Exploring medical education's avoidance of patient and provider suffering

05-16-2018 06:32

Discussion of the difference between pain and suffering.  Review of the limited literature on this topic that includes some clear messages (in medical student oriented research) that the topic of coping with one's own or another's suffering is not adequately addressed and an absence of any significant offerings for resident education.  Exploration of the value to being present with suffering for the patient as well as the medical learner.  Exposure to tools (including online videos) as well as a call to action to be creating a toolkit for resources to be used to help all medical learners (and faculty) become more comfortable with their level of control and what they have to offer to patients who are suffering.
