Bridging the Gap: Integrating Mental Health Professionals in Residencies to Reduce Health Disparities

09-28-2016 16:23

Integrating behavioral health services in medical settings has been one of the important parts of the integrated care movement, producing collaborative practices so that both medical and mental health professionals can effectively work together to address all aspects of a patient’s health, as well as certain disparities that exist in underserved populations. However, there is no one way to practice integrated care, and very little research exists in how to smoothly transition mental health learners into primary care, while simultaneously working with residents and medical professionals. This seminar will be presented by faculty and learners from two different family medicine residencies that integrate mental health learners into primary care medical clinics. We will discuss the logistics of beginning and continuing these integrated models, while highlighting lessons learned from this integration process. Additionally, the presenters will share preliminary results from surveys and focus groups regarding successes and challenges of these integrated models of practice and training. A large portion of the seminar will be given for small group interaction and perspectives of integrated care. We will lead the participants in these discussions that will allow them to identify how to start similar mental health integration in medical settings, how to improve on existing integration, or what research questions need to be asked and addressed in order to further the field. Participants will leave the session having identified clear next steps to start training mental health learners in integrated care, enhance existing training collaborations, or initiate research collaborations and scholarship projects.
