Evidence for Influencing Vaccine Behavior: Not Throwing Away Our Shot

10-04-2021 15:34

As COVID-19 vaccines have rolled out nation-wide, we know that some patients have been hesitant to receive the vaccine. What can clinicians do to change this? The evidence for face-to-face interventions for changing vaccination behavior (including routine vaccines) suggests that these interventions are largely ineffective. This is the powerpoint from a session given at the 42nd Forum for Behavioral Science in Medical Education which reviewed currently available evidence regarding interventions to increase vaccine acceptance in hesitant patient populations, including health education materials such as brochures, communication training for face-to-face interventions, use of health narratives, and community-based interventions. We discussed challenges and opportunities for clinicians regarding increasing vaccine rates, including recommended evidence-based interventions that address the knowledge-behavior gap.
