Family Medicine Scope Offers Innovative Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Learning

Washington State is dramatically medically underserved; every county has at least one designated health professional shortage area (Health Resources & Services Adminitration, 2021).  Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is Washington’s community based medical school, funded by legislative support to expand medical education and health care access in the communities across the state that need it most.  When the entire state faces a shortage of physicians, everyone is needed to train medical students, especially during the clerkship years.  To meet the demands for high quality precepting in our Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), the scope of Family Physicians helped meet objectives in behavioral health, obstetrics and gynecology, procedural care, and the care of children in addition to both ambulatory and hospitalized patient care.  Learn how WSU structured their LIC to make the most of how care is delivered, even in the most rural and underserved locations throughout the state.  Discover ways that family medicine can support quality education throughout most of the core clerkship disciplines.  Discuss how these innovative approaches can improve faculty recruitment, investment in primary care, and the mission alignment of the workforce pipeline.
