Abstract

Medical students' experiences in family medicine clerkship play a role in their career choices. As clinician educators, it is our responsibility to not only shape the next generation of physicians but also promote family medicine as a profession. In this seminar, participants will walk through five domains of working with medical students in the clinical setting: learner centeredness, professionalism and role modeling, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based reflection and improvement, and learner assessment. Key topics of this highly interactive session include (1) identifying student learning level, (2) precepting microskills, and (3) demonstrating effective feedback. We will explore how these concepts intertwine to capitalize on teaching opportunities with medical students. Participants will leave this seminar with valuable tools to apply at their home institutions.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe five domains of working with medical students in the clinical setting.
  2. Analyze the relationship between learner level and precepting microskills.
  3. Demonstrate how to give effective feedback.
