Innovative Pearls from the NIH-Sponsored Behavioral and Social Sciences Initiative

02-18-2010 18:50

In 2004, a landmark Institute of Medicine report found that even though over half of all causes of morbidity and mortality are due to behavioral and social factors, most US medical schools do not provide sufficient teaching in the behavioral and social sciences. In response, the National Institutes for Health awarded grants to nine medical schools to develop, pilot and disseminate behavioral and social science curricula across six domains: mind-body interactions in health and disease, patient behavior, physician role and behavior, physician-patient interactions, social and cultural issues in health care, and health policy and economics. Presenters from four of the nine schools will share innovative methods for teaching and measuring behavioral and social science learning in the medical school curriculum. FMDRL_ID: 2718
