Mentorship: Creating a Culture of Inclusivity

05-24-2020 03:33

The University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion Committee has identified that to appreciate and attract greater diversity in
our department, we first needed to embrace and support our current departmental
community. We thus adopted mentorship as a key instrument to not only promote personal
development (including promotion and career satisfaction), career guidance, and scholarly
development and productivity (Sambunjak,2006), but also transform mentor and mentee alike,
particularly when opportunities arise to mentor across cultural difference. Our committee
developed a toolkit to guide mentorship with a lens to promote a culture of inclusivity. This has
renewed conversations across our department to expand concepts and practice of mentorship
for clinical learners, faculty, and staff. In this workshop, we will share tools we have developed
to explore a robust mentorship experience and challenge participants to adopt change in their
own institutions.
