Resiliency Training

10-09-2012 09:11

This Presentation begins with a brief review of the research documenting the adverse effects of residency training on physical and emotional well-being. Next there will be a brief review of research tying resident burnout and depression to increased risk of medical errors and patient safety concerns which have driven a second round of proposed duty hour reductions. Following that, faculty concerns are reviewed related to the reduced quality and overall rigor of training resulting from the initial round of duty hour restrictions and fears about the additional impact of the new pending restrictions. Recent research documenting changes in work values across the Baby Boomer, Gen-X and Millennial generations will also be shared with special emphasis placed on the increased value placed on leisure by the Millennials when compared to Baby Boomers. Part two of the presentation will begin with a review of the research on resiliency training with special focus on the results of randomized clinical trials demonstrating significant improvement in outcomes related to mood, academic performance, work performance, social adjustment and parenting effectiveness. The reasoning behind the US military's decision to add resiliency training to basic training will also be reviewed. Finally, the outline and format for a 13-week pilot resiliency training group adapted for residents is reviewed. FMDRL_ID: 4116
