Building Capacity for Scholarship in your Teaching Practice: Tips for Engaging Learners

GME faculty and resident scholarly activity is a required, reportable component of all ACGME-accredited training programs. Many important forms of scholarly work such as the scholarship of integration and application are often not regarded as 'scholarship' by physicians with developed expertise in these domains. Faculty and residents working outside of traditional academic settings (eg community-based, integrated health systems, FQHC) face many barriers to publishing, including a lack of time and mentorship. There are many best practices for systematically addressing these challenges. Faculty development experience in this
important domain of residency education is of paramount important in building capacity for scholarly work. The lessons learned can be applied to all training programs (urban vs rural; academic vs community-based).
