The gap between the population's demand for primary care services and primary care's capacity to meet that demand is widening, leading to reduced access for patients and increased burnout for physicians. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants can help address the primary care demand/capacity gap, but their numbers are insufficient. A reasonable solution is to empower other health professionals, in particular registered nurses and pharmacists, to see certain patients.
