Creating Community-Centered Competencies and Feedback Tools for Medical Student Community Engagement Education

08-30-2020 17:49

The Medical College of Wisconsin-Central Wisconsin (MCW-CW) regional campus seeks to develop and nurture strong community-campus partnerships. Given the large role of social determinants in health outcomes, we recognize that effective partnerships are necessary for physicians to optimally care for the needs of their patients and communities. We proposed the development of a tool to assess the competency of students with respect to community engagement and interviewed community partners and students to identify student-level competencies for nurturing effective community partnerships, with an emphasis on the character aspects of trustworthiness, perspective, social intelligence, and persistence. The students emphasized their desire for feedback to help them better develop networking, leadership and advocacy skills. Incorporating these competencies, we are creating feedback tools for student/community partner interactions and evaluating whether the feedback is valued, actionable, and user-friendly for students, faculty, and community partners. Our process and data are shared in our presentation.
