Failure is a subject that gets little attention in our field. The psychological impact of failure is not readily addressed in medicine yet the impact is known to be substantial. It can affect faculty and learners by blocking accurate self-reflection and self-evaluation and it can also lead to unprofessional behaviors like hiding mistakes and errors. This seminar was designed to help participants become familiar with different approaches to failure with attention to fields that embrace failure as a tool for growth and creativity. The presenters reviewed the impact of perfectionism, the imposter syndrome, and the shame/blame cycle on how residents learn. They discussed failure and how it can in fact foster resilience in medical learners when dealt with in productive ways. Participants were challenged to share their own experiences with failure, with the goal of creating a culture change that promotes honesty, integrity and productive use of their failure experiences. Participants completed a Think/Share/Pair where they practiced reviewing their own failure experience and then partner’s failure experience using a brief self-reflection exercise.
