Integrating Behavioral Science Into Precepting: A Collaborative Model

09-27-2016 15:42

Precepting, the process of teaching during the clinical encounter, is an invaluable tool for resident learning in family medicine residencies. It provides an opportunity to reinforce didactic learning and apply knowledge and skills to individual patient care. There has been little attention given, however, to integrating behavioral science teaching into precepting. If preceptors do not reinforce behavioral topics or model the skills necessary for assessing and addressing psychosocial concerns during the clinic visit, then residents will not likely incorporate the psychosocial aspects of care into their practices. This workshop focused on the process of collaborating with attending physicians and residents during precepting as a behavioral science educator to improve resident learning and patient care. Please find the powerpoint presentation, sample goals and objectives of behavioral precepting, sample model, role plays and resources.
