The Patient-Centered Medical Home is currently a major focus for generalist physicians and has been adopted by the AAP, AAFP, ACP, and AOA. The principles of this concept have been further defined to outline the purpose, function, and importance of the Patient-Centered Medical Home to the delivery and quality of healthcare in the United States. An understanding of these principles and how they relate to the practice of Family Medicine is critical. A contextual reference to the components of Healthy People 2010, the Future of Family Medicine Report, and the Family Medicine Clerkship Core Content Curriculum Project will demonstrate the framework used to translate this information into curriculum. We will provide examples of how these concepts and principles have been integrated within our Family Medicine clerkship curriculum. Small group discussion will allow further development of curricular components that could be implemented to teach and demonstrate these principles. When considering typical third year student clerkships, it is the community-precepted Family Medicine clerkship that will most likely provide the only opportunity for medical students to truly experience the Patient-Centered Medical Home.
