Utilizing a Value-Based Care Resident Rotation to Improve Quality of Care and Resident Recruitment

09-17-2020 00:54

Increasing educational activities for primary care residents is important given the evolving primary care landscape. The movement from a system mainly dependent on fee-for-service primary care delivery to one where value-based care delivery plays a key role in structure, culture, and even compensation is one that needs intentional training experiences, education, and mentorship. At the same time, creating an internal pipeline of excited, motivated, and educated primary care physicians is important to health care, especially in Texas. We aim to describe the creation of the UT Health Improvement System Resident Rotation that aimed teach residents about the evolving health care landscape, promote the importance of primary care leadership, and recruit primary care physicians in a competitive market. We will present the curriculum, the implementation pathway from pilot to required rotation, and qualitative and quantitative data about retention and resident experiences.
